MAAAMHL: Injuries Lead To A Frustrated Caps Squad

Stopping a skid can be hard when bodies keep dropping.

It's been a tough couple of weeks for the Central Plains Capitals and the light at the end of the tunnel seems to be getting further and further away as a 13 player roster is hindering their ability to compete in the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League.

“Guys just keep going down and we finished the game against Kenora with seven forwards and five defenders,” says Caps head coach, Brad Gnidziejko. “We don't even really have anyone we can call up as there's no City Midget team in Portage. Drake Sheppard from MacGregor's the only guy we've been able to bring up and he's been doing well.”

The Caps started this week off with a 6-2 win over Interlake Wednesday night when they had more of a complete line-up but lost scorer Logan Calder in the process. The boys then fell 5-3 to Parkland Friday, again with 15 skaters in the line-up including Sheppard as an AP. Tanner Boyle and Max Neill both went down with injury versus the Rangers, dropping the Caps to 13 for their match against Kenora on Sunday where they lost 5-1 at the BDO Centre.

“It's tough to get anything going when guys keep dropping out of the line-up,” says Gnidziejko. “The boys are staying positive through this all though. We've got a couple of road games coming up this weekend so hopefully, some of those bumps and bruises will heal up and we can get some bodies back.”

The Caps are in Morden to face Pembina Valley (9-4-0) Saturday night, and Winnipeg Sunday to face the Wild (13-2-0).
