NLMML: Big Weekend in the NLMMHL*

There were a total of 10 games played in the Newfoundland Major Midget Hockey League over the weekend, with all five teams playing a round-robin tournament that saw all games count towards the standings of the league.

Dennis GM Western Kings 9 vs. St. John’s Privateers 2

Captain Brady Griffin-Hefford notched a hat trick — two goals on the power play and one short-handed — to lead the Kings to a lopsided win in its first game Friday night at the Glacier in Mount Pearl.

Ryan Gillam added two power play markers and an assist from his rearguard position with the Kings, while single tallies came from the sticks of Jamie Penney, Robert Hicks, Mateo Short and George Young.

Pierce Halliday and Joel Bishop lit the lamp for the Privateers.

Ian Woolfrey picked up the win, while Chris Kirkham was saddled with the loss.

Central IcePak 5 vs. St. John’s Privateers 3

Saturday afternoon in the Goulds, Jared Lush scored twice (once into an empty net) and Scottie Greene added a goal and two assists as Central defeated the St. John’s Privateers 5-3. Nick Fitzgerald scored the winner with 44 seconds to play, on a power play, after St. John’s were assessed a too many men on the ice penalty with 1:10 remaining. Kyle Champion had the other IcePak goal.

Aaron Peddle scored twice for the Privateers, while Adam Nolan had the other goal.

Noah Weir got the win and Chris Smith took the loss.

St. John’s Maple Leafs 7 vs. Tri-Pen Osprey 3

In the Saturday evening game, Iain Gamba and Kyle McGrath both scored twice, as the Maple Leafs defeated the Osprey 7-3, on the strength of five third period goals. Blake Fudge, Daniel Toope and Cody Langmead also scored for the Leafs.

Conal McNamara, Ryan Dawson and Nathaniel Duffett replied for Tri-Pen.

Mackenzie Janes picked up the win for the blue and white, while Riley Akerman took the loss for the Osprey.

Dennis GM Western 7 vs. Central IcePak 2

Mike Lundrigan was the offensive weapon for the Kings with a three-goal performance highlighting a decisive win over the IcePak Saturday night at the Glacier in Mount Pearl.

Jalen Gillard, Iain Pilgrim, Robert Hicks and Jamie Penney provided the other goals for the Kings.

Jared Lush and Kyle Champion scored for the IcePak.

Luke House gets the win and Curtis Barrett takes the loss.

St. John’s Maple Leafs 5 vs. St. John’s Privateers 2

Sunday morning, Grant Thompson scored two power play goals to help lead his Maple Leafs to a 5-2 win over their Capital City rivals. Iain Gamba, Dylan Guy and Kyle McGrath had the other goals.

Max French and Colin Chafe scored for the Privateers.

Zachary Gauvreau was in net for the win, while Chris Smith was on the losing end of the decision.

Tri-Pen Osprey 11 vs. Central IcPak 3

Squaring off with defending champions, the Central IcePak, Tri-Pen shooters found the back of the net 11 times in an 11-3 route.

Nathaniel Duffett (3), Reilly Deering (2), Conal McNamara, Ryan Dawson, Andrew Churchill, Cameron Simms, Lyndon Thorne and Ethan Street scored for the Osprey.

Riley Gill, Kyle Regular and Andrew Mercer responded for Central.

Brent Hatfield posted the victory while Noah Weir took the loss.

St. John’s Maple Leafs 4 vs. Dennis GM Western Kings 3 (SO)

Andrew Barron had a goal and two helpers to lead the Maple Leafs to a 4-3 shootout win over the Kings Sunday at the Goulds Arena.

Matthew Smith shared the limelight with a goal and an assist for the Leafs, while Dylan Guy scored the other regulation goal for the Leafs.

Kyle McGrath scored the winning goal in the shootout.

Brady Griffin-Hefford, Brandon Sexton and Jamie Penney scored for the Kings in regulation time.

Mackenzie Janes picked up the win while Ian Woolfrey was the hard luck loser.

Tri-Pen Osprey 6 vs. St. John’s Privateers 2

The Privateers would round out the weekend, dropping a 6-2 decision to the Osprey.

Cameron Simms (2), Andrew Churchill, Ryan Petten, Nathan Duffett and Reilley Deering (on a penalty shot) scored for Tri-Pen. Max French and Shamus Sloane replied for the Privateers.

Riley Akerman picked up the win, while Chris Kirkham took the loss.

Tri-Pen Osprey 6 vs. Dennis GM Western Kings 0
Conal McNamara paved the way for the Osprey with a two-goal game, while Andrew Churchill, Ryan Dawson and Cass Warren added single markers to the scoresheet for the Osprey.
The Kings were unable to solve Brent Hatfield, as he posted the season’s first shutout by any team.

Central IcePak 4 vs.  St. John’s Maple Leafs 2

In the final game of the weekend, the Central IcePak foiled the Leafs’ chances at a perfect record, scoring a 4-2 win at the Goulds Arena on Thanksgiving Day Monday.

Scottie Greene led the IcePak attack with two goals. Kyle Champion and Jared Lush netted singles. Matthew Smith and Grant Thompson replied.

Curtis Barrett would get the win and Zachary Gauvreau would be tagged with the loss.

Action resumes next weekend at the Glacier, with the Leafs hosting the Osprey on Oct. 18 and 19. Game 1 is scheduled for 8 p.m., while puck drop for Game 2 is listed at 10 a.m..

Meanwhile, the Western Kings will host the Central IcePak for a pair of games on the same days. Game 1 is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., while Game 2 is slated for a 10 a.m. start.
