GNML: Week 2 Recap*
- Submitted by

After briefly contemplating icing a minor midget team, in addition to their traditional major midget squad, the North Bay Trappers opted for one combined grouping this year, under the guidance of long-time hockeyman Guy Blanchard.

Hard to argue with the results to date, as the Trappers boast a perfect 3-0 record in the early going. North Bay doubled the Timmins Majors 4-2 in their season opener, with goals from Mason McMahon, Nick Davis, Joe Whittet and Eric Mondoux more than offsetting the Timmins tallies of David Leveillé and Cameron Dutkiewicz.

The Trappers looked even more impressive the next day at home, riding a two-goal performance from Sam Garagan and the shutout netminding of Drew Joyal to a 7-0 whitewashing of the Majors.

McMahon, Matt Hardwick, Dylan Bond, Ian Denomme and Mondoux joined Garagan on the scoresheet, as the teams continued their home and home set the following weekend in Timmins.

The change of venue had no effect on the end results, as North Bay extended their winning streak to three games with a 4-1 win over the Majors. Brett Shawana, Cole Craft, Ryan Mills and Hardwick netted one goal each for the winners, while Riley Brousseau answered in a losing cause.

The Sault Ste Marie Midget Greyhounds kept pace, step for step, with the Trappers, recording three victories of their own, all over the Kapuskasing Flyers.

The visiting Saultites stopped the Flyers 5-3 back on September 9th, as Noah Boman paced the attack with a pair of goals. Camaryn Baber, Nik Gervasi and Caleb Wood rounded things off, with 2015-2016 GNML scoring champion Lucas Theriault chipping in with a pair of assists.

Samuel Bourdages countered with a two-goal effort for the homeside, with a singleton coming courtesy of Sebastien Despatie. The Greyhounds needed overtime to make it two straight the next night, with Theriault drilling home his second of the game in the extra session.

Gervasi potted his second and third goals of the season, with Boman adding the other, while Bourdages (2), Jacy Filion and Jared Dupuis countered for Kapuskasing.

A third straight close encounter would see the Sault eke out a 3-2 win on Sunday, with Bradon Caruso, Kelly Quevillon and Theriault finding the back of the net for the Hounds. Bourdages extended his goal scoring streak to three games, with Maxim Lacroix chipping in with a solo tally.

The GNML continued a "two-tier" trend into week two, as the New Liskeard Cubs racked up a pair of wins, while both Timmins and Kapuskasing remain in search of their first victory of the season.

The Cubs edged the Majors 5-4, building up a 4-0 lead after forty minutes of play, and holding on for the win. Brady Lacharity enjoyed a two-goal performance in his debut with the Cubs, while Devin Williamson, Alex Maille and Cole Vaudri-Callen drained one marker each.

Errol Hester replied with a pair of goals for Timmins, with Linden Spencer and Seth Reuben also finding the mark. On the road the very next night, the Cubs made it two in a row, defeating Kapuskasing 3-1.

Tristan Flood (Cubs) and Foster Barrette (Flyers) traded first period goals, with Robbie Popkie burying the game winner in the second period. Devin Williamson provided a little insurance, hitting the empty net with just 38 seconds to play.

While the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves have yet to face regular season competition - they will play host to the Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds on Tuesday, September 27th - the Central Regional Midget AAA Tournament host will be joined by both the Sault and Kapuskasing this weekend, competing in tournament play down south.

All three teams are part of the 36-field entry taking part in the Toronto Titans Major Midget Tournament, with Sudbury slated to face the Peterborough Petes, Toronto Marlboros, Richmond Hill Coyotes and Toronto Nationals in round robin play.

The Sudbury Minor Midget "AAA" Wolves are also on the road, although they head north for a three game series with the Timmins Majors. Coach Shawn Frappier and company are off to Kapuskasing the very next weekend, opening their season with eight straight road games before enjoying home ice advantage on Friday, October 22nd against the Greyhounds.
