2014 Atlantic Regionals Day Four: Halifax McDonalds Win Atlantic Title

NEW GLASGOW, NS, April 6, 2014 - The Halifax McDopnald (NS) scored two unanswered goals in the third to skate to a 5-4 win over the Saint John Vitos (NB) and the gold medal as Major Midget Atlantics champs and will represent the region at the Telus Cup (National Championship).

The McDonalds came out strong in the first and mounted a 2-0 lead before the Vitos got on the scoreboard shorthanded. Then scored a scond before the buzzer went to end the 20 minutes of play to knot the score 2-2 after one. 

The second belonged to the Vitos as they scored a pair early and allowed just one goal by the Macs to lead 4-3 going into the final frame. But a goal about four minutes in drew them even and the winning goal with just over four minutes left in the game gave them the win. 

Johnny Jones led the Macs with three goals, the second, third and fourth for a natural hat trick. Luc Poirier scored the game winning goal and assisted on a pair. Justin Doiron put Halifax on the scoreboard first. Morgan Nauss picked up a pair of assists.

Matthew Gray got the Vitos underway with an unassisted shorthanded goal in the first. Tyler Copeland, Jean Michel LeBlanc and Curtis Hastings added the Vitos other counters. Gray also picked up a pair of assists. 

Justin Ritcey was the winning goaltender making 30 saves. Kyle Porter made 20 saves in the loss. Jones was named player of the game for the Macs.
