The Halifax McDonalds will be looking to repeat as The Chronicle Herald East Coast IceJam this January. In order to do so they will rely on many new faces on the team. One of those new faces is Shane Bowers. Shane is no stranger to success at the IceJam though; he was an integral part of the 2014 Bantam Champions, Bubba Ray’s Gull. He scored a hat trick in the championship game versus Dartmouth. One of those goals tied the game with 33 seconds remaining and forcing the two teams to overtime where the Gulls would eventually win. The successful tournament would also see Shane named to the IceJam’s First All-Star Team.
Shane Bowers is a 15-year-old from Herring Cove. Even before stepping on the ice this season with major midget he was touted as “one to watch.” So far he’s living up to the hype. Shane’s a strong skater with incredible puck control. He led the Nova Scotia Major Bantam League last season with 33 goals and 69 points (only one point from the leader). His success continued this past September when he was led the NSEMMHL in points.
Last month Hockey Nova Scotia announced its male hockey team that will compete at the Canada Games in B.C. this coming February. It came with no surprise that Shane was announced to this team. Shane will be looked upon as a clutch player in pressure situations. What fans will find out is those are the moments that Shane performs the best.
Another player for scouts to watch comes from the capital city of New Brunswick. Mika Cyr is currently making waves for the Fredericton Service Master Clean Canadiens of the NB/PEI Hockey League. Mika currently leads the league with 18 goals and 31 points. The Center from St. Anne, NB is playing disciplined hockey with only two penalty minutes in his 18 games played so far this season. As an associate player last season he only played three games, but he made the most of it by earning a point in each of those games.
Mika’s efforts are translating to the success of his team as the Canadiens are currently in second place of the NB/PEI Hockey League. He will also proudly wear his provincial colours at the 2015 Canada Winter Games this February. Mika was selected by Hockey New Brunswick to be a member of is male ice hockey team.
The Chronicle Herald East Coast IceJam will run from Jan. 7 to 11 at the BMO Centre in Bedford. The five-day tournament will showcase all the major midget teams from Atlantic Canada. Visit www.IceJam.ca for more information.
