A winning weekend for Halifax has vaulted the McDonald’s into first place in the Nova Scotia major midget hockey league.
Shane Bowers’ second-period goal stood as the winner and lifted Halifax to a 4-3 victory over the Valley Wildcats at the Civic Centre on Sunday afternoon.
The McDonald’s (23-9-1), who doubled Newbridge Academy 4-2 on Saturday, moved one point ahead of the Gladiators (21-6-4) for first in the league.
Bowers, who also had an assist on Bradley Shaw’s first-period goal, leads the league with 21 goals and 50 points.
Doug D’Arnall and Jacob Hickey were the other Halifax goal scorers. Drake Batherson tallied twice and Michael Dill had the other goal for the last-place Wildcats, who slip to 10-21-0.
Mustangs 4, Gladiators 3: At Bridgewater, Tristan d’Entremont scored his second goal of the game 1:17 into the third to snap a 3-all tie as South Shore won for the second time in as many days.
Isaac Bridge and Matthew Barron also scored for South Shore (18-9-6), which was coming off a 6-2 win over Valley on Saturday.
Johnny Foley, Kyle Sexton and Connor Kirby collected the goals for the Gladiators.
Tradesmen 4, Weeks 2: At New Glasgow, Branden Dauphinee had three assists and Cody Smith turned aside 23 shots as Cape Breton earned a weekend split against Pictou County. The Tradesmen (13-18-3) lost 5-3 to the Weeks (11-18-1) on Saturday.
