BCMML: Weekly Recap Week 16

10 of the League’s 11 teams were in Richmond for Showcase Weekend, which featured plenty of interesting matchups.
 
Cariboo (25-4-1-0) picked up two (2) more wins to further cement the top spot in the standings, while Vancouver North East (21-4-0-3), Okanagan (19-6-0-2), Valley West (17-10-1-2) and Fraser Valley (16-10-3-1) round out the top five (5).

Okanagan Rockets vs. Kootenay Ice
Game 1: Kootenay 5, Okanagan 1
Game 2: Kootenay 5, Okanagan 4      
 
The Ice froze the Rockets this weekend, winning both games. Kootenay’s offense was on display in Game 1, with Aiden Jenner
recording a hat trick and Mathew Cooper and Tommy
McConnachie also finding the back of the net. Cody Shiavon
scored the lone goal for the Rockets, while Jaysen MacLean got
the win in net for the Ice.

South Island Royals vs. Cariboo Cougars
Game 1: Cariboo 7, South Island 1
Game 2: Cariboo 5, South Island 2
 
After two (2) losses against the Chiefs last weekend, the Cougars got back to their winning ways.
 
The Cougars’ offense exploded in Game 1, with Brenna Malgunas (2), Daine Dubois, Corey Cunningham, Joel Patsey,
Mason Richey, and Trey Thomas finding the back of the net. Marcus Allen picked up the win, while Brendan Martin scored the lone goal for the Royals.
 
In Game 2, Trey Thomas opened the scoring just over a minute into the game on a power play goal, but South Island’s Matt Berryman kept things close with a goal at 13:57.
 
The Cougars would take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. The Cougars extended their lead to 3-1 in the second period thanks to a goal from Daine Dubois, with South Island’s Bryson Hines making it 3-2 in the last minutes of the frame.
 
Cariboo would shut the door in the third perios, with Devin Sutton and Ty Kolle scoring to make the final score 5-2. Zack Wickson picked up the win in net for the Cougars.
 
Vancouver NW Giants vs. North Island Silvertips
Game 1: Vancouver NW 4, North Island 3
Game 2: Vancouver NW 3, North Island 1         
 
The Silvertips took an early lead in Game 1, up 2-0 late in the second period thanks to goals from Keaton Mastrodonato and Mattias Dal Monte.
 
The Giants’ Matteo Pecchia sparked the comeback with a goal with just two (2) minutes left in the second period.
 
Jared Winkel made it 3-1 for the Silvertips at the 14:51 mark of the third, but Liam Kindree made it 3-2 and Pecchia tied things up five (5) minutes later to force overtime.
 
Pecchia’s hot hand won the game for the Giants, as he scored with 1:31 to go in the extra frame to get the win.

Vancouver NE Chiefs vs. Fraser Valley Thunderbirds
Game 1: Vancouver NE 4, Fraser Valley 0
Game 2: Vancouver NE 3, Fraser Valley 0
The Chiefs picked up their 8th and 9th straight wins over the weekend, picking up two (2) shutouts in the process.
 
In Game 1, Jonathan Holloway earned the shutout win as Sho Takai, Ethan Leyh, Liam Evenson, and Dante Ballarin found the back of the net.
 
In Game 2, it was Kolby Matthews who got the shutout victory, with Leyh (2) and Liam Ryan scoring.
 
Greater Vancouver Canadians vs. Valley West Hawks
Game 1: Greater Vancouver 8, Valley West 5
Game 2: Valley West 4, Greater Vancouver 3
 
Game 1 between the Canadians and Hawks was a barnburner, with a total of 13 goals scored between the two (2) teams. Greater Vancouver’s offense exploded in the first period, finding the back of the net five (5) times.
 
The Canadians then followed with three (3) goals in the second period. Daniel Pearson (2), Henry Rybinski, River Fahey, Michael Araki-Young, Nathan Kelly, Scott Atkinson, and Grayson Valente scored for the Canadians, while Tyler Ho (2), Bryce Anderson, Nolan Krogfoss, and Alek Sukunda scored for the Hawks in a losing effort.
 
The Hawks would bounce back in Game 2, winning thanks to goals from Kabir Gill, Josh Pederson, Aiden Barfoot, and Krogfoss. Atkinson (2) and Hunter Donahoe scored for the Canadians in the loss.
