Important Things to Keep In Mind When You Start Your Season
There are several key times during the hockey season that injury rates increase; one of those times is the beginning of the season.
Although most hockey players at the midget level train during the off-season, there is still a transition period as players begin try-outs and move into the competitive season.
During try-outs, athletes push themselves to their highest level of physical performance in order to either make the team, or to secure playing time.
Simultaneously, the frequency and volume of on ice activity increases. When combined together, the end result can lead to muscle strain, most commonly seen in the hip and groin complex.
If you find yourself in a situation where you experience an injury, even if it seems minor, have it looked at by a licensed medical professional as soon as possible.
At Dynamic Physiotherapy, we are committed to your recovery! To prevent a muscle strain that can lead to loss of ice time/games played, we recommend the following:
- Coaches should plan for graduated increases in practice intensity and duration as the season starts.
- Athletes should participate in a thorough dynamic warm up prior to stepping on the ice. This warm up can take up to 30min if done properly.
- Athletes must be aware of their own body and “tweaks” should not be brushed off . They are a warning from your body that you are working at a near maximal load and your body may need a little more time to adapt.
- Dehydration can be a causative factor in injury. Remember that you need to replace both water AND electrolytes. There are many options available on the market, but be sure that they have the informed choice seal of approval (free of banned substance in sport). Biosteel and Vega Sport Electrolyte Hydrator are both good options.
- Proper cool down and recovery (foam rolling, stretching, proper nutrition WITHIN 30min of stepping off the ice) are critical for athletes.
