100 games in ten weeks – so far, the 2015-2015 Major Midget League season has been full of action. While the league-leading Cariboo Cougars (15-2-1) had the weekend off, Week 10 still had plenty of exciting hockey, including a few regional rivalries between Vancouver Northwest and Greater Vancouver, and Thompson and Okanagan. Vancouver Northwest Giants vs. Greater Vancouver Canadians
Game 1: Vancouver NW 3, Greater Vancouver 2
Game 2: Vancouver NW 3, Greater Vancouver 3
Both games in this series between Vancouver rivals were closely contested. Game 1 saw Vancouver NW take the early lead thanks to two (2) goals less than ten (10) minutes into the game – the first by Carter Stephenson, and the second by Keegan Jones. The Canadians’ Owen Seidel mustered a power play goal late in the first, and Samuel Atkins scored midway through the second to tie things up. However, the Giants’ Jones scored his second goal with about five (5) minutes left in the second frame, and it proved to be the game winner. Game 2 started with a 3-0 lead for the Giants (goals from Desi Burgart, Nash Dabb, and Josh Latta), but the Canadians came back thanks to goals from Kyle Uy (2) and Michael Tilbury, and tied the game.
Thompson Blazers vs. Okanagan Rockets
Game 1: Thompson 2, Okanagan 5
Game 2: Thompson 1, Okanagan 3
This battle of the interior was a home-and-home, with the games split between Kelowna and Kamloops. In Kamloops, Okanagan scored five (5) goals en route to a 5-2 win over the Blazers. Calvin Rout, Sam Binfet, Benjamin Dietrich-Scammell, Jeffrey Schlegel, and Mark Krabben scored for the Rockets, while Tyler Ward and Matthew Facchinelli scored for the Blazers. The Blazers kept in closer in Kelowna, but the Rockets still came away with the win after Carter Rhine, Brett Witala, and Binfet scored. Josh DeCoffe scored the lone goal for Kamloops.
North Island Silvertips vs. Vancouver Northeast Chiefs
Game 1: North Island 1, Vancouver NE 7
Game 2: North Island 2, Vancouver NE 6
The NE Chiefs made the trip to the island to face the Silvertips, and they came away with two (2) solid wins. Game 1 saw the Chiefs notch seven (7) goals from seven (7) different players – Kristofor Zlomislic, Harris Pearce, Kyle Johnson, Parker Colley, Caleb Fantillo, Matthew Davis, and Thomas Semple. The ‘Tips’ only goal came from Matthew Cahill. Game 2 was a similar story, with the Chiefs again getting goals from five (5) different players – Jeffrey Wong (2), San Chung, Callum Volpe, Colley, and Fantillo. North Island’s goals came from Owen McDonald and Cahill.
South Island Royals vs. Valley West Hawks
Game 1: South Island 0, Valley West 3
Game 2: South Island 4, Valley West 1
Valley West’s Jakob Walter got the shutout in Game 1, as the Hawks got a 3-0 victory over the South Island Royals. James Malm (2) and Ben Evanish scored for Valley West. Game 2 saw a reversal in fortune, as the Royals scored three (3) third period goals to get the win. Trevor Ayre scored for Valley West, while Tomba Huddlestan (2), Jordan Guiney, and Parker Ellis scored for the Royals.
Kootenay Ice vs. Fraser Valley Thunderbirds
Game 1: Kootenay 2, Fraser Valley 5
Game 2: Kootenay 4, Fraser Valley 2
The Thunderbirds took the trip to Nelson this past weekend, and split the series with the Kootenay Ice. Game 1 saw an even-handed scoring effort by the Thunderbirds, with one (1) goal in the first period, two (2) goals in the second, and two (2) in the third. Brett Clayton (2), Danny Choi (2), and Nic Ponak scored for Fraser Valley, while Blake Sidoni got both of Kootenay’s goals. Kootenay rallied for Game 2, and secured a 4-2 victory. Nate Castonguay and Clayton scored for the TBirds, while Justin Podgorenko, Korbyn Chabot, Tanner Costa, and Evan Gorman scored in the winning effort for the Ice.
