The Strathmore UFA Bisons earned a spot in the division final after steamrolling the Calgary Royals in three games straight.
Coach Dan MacDonald said hot goaltending from Airdrie’s Kurtis Chapman helped create momentum in their favour during the final game.
“They came at us really hard in the first period,” said the coach, explaining that Chapman helped shut down the opponent’s offence, with a .946 save percentage in the series.
The Alberta AAA Midget Hockey League team won game one 5-4 at the Stu Peppard Arena in Calgary, Feb. 26, followed by a 5-0 shutout in Strathmore, Feb. 28, and a 9-2 victory back in Calgary on March 1.
“It was a direct result of good goaltending that allowed us to open it up,” he said.
MacDonald said that when Airdrie’s Gary Haden scored the fifth goal to go up 5-2 early in the third that ended the push back from the Royals.
The Bisons have yet to lose in this playoff campaign, and begin the division final series on March 8, with the opponent yet to be determined at press time.
