The Brandon Midget Wheat Kings stretched their Manitoba Midget ‘AAA’ Hockey League winning streak to 12 games last weekend, placing them at the top of the standings alongside the Winnipeg Wild with 18 wins and two losses.
At the Brandon Sportsplex on Friday, the Wheat Kings came back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the visiting Kenora Thistles 3-2. Carter Sawchuk, Nolan Ritchie and Dylan Halliday scored for Brandon, while Kenora’s goals came from Sulivan Shortreed and Cooper Witherspoon.
Keegan Watkins-McIntyre stopped 26 of the 28 shots he faced in Brandon’s net to earn the win. Brandon scored four goals in the first period while keeping the Pembina Valley Hawks off of the board on their way to a 9-2 victory at the Sportsplex on Saturday. Lynden McCallum had three goals in the contest, while Halliday and Sawchuk notched a pair each. Ritchie and Tanner Morrison rounded out the onslaught.
Kolton Shindle and Svan Bazin scored for Pembina Valley. The ‘AAA’ Wheat Kings faced the Parkland Rangers in Dauphin on Wednesday, but results were not available by press time. They will face the Winnipeg Wild on Saturday in a battle between the league’s top-two squads.
