BCMML: Floris’ Six-Point Game Clinches Cariboo Sweep Over Thompson

Floris’ six-point game clinches Cariboo sweep over Thompson

Everything Hunter Floris touched turned to gold as his six-point performance led the Cariboo Cougars to a 9-0 thrashing over the Thompson Blazers at Kin 1.

The 17-year-old Vanderhoof product collected four goals and two assists on Sunday as the defending BC Major Midget League Champions (BCMML) continue their pursuit for first overall.

“His game speaks for itself. I have said right from the beginning he has been excellent for us both on and off the ice and he scores goals not a lot of guys in this league can’t score, when the puck is on his stick it’s a good opportunity,” says Tyler Brough, Cougars Head Coach.

The Cougars jumped out to intermission leads of 2-0 and 4-0 courtesy of Floris (2), Brandon Dent and Craig MacDonald beating Blazers netminder Ethan Langenegger who allowed nine goals on 41 shots.

The flood gates opened in the third as Floris completed his big game with two more goals followed by singles from Brennan Malgunas, Brendan Pigeon and Riley Krane.

Brough adds the team showed a lot more killer instinct with a sizeable lead than in weeks past – something he believes is a step in the right direction.

“In games past we did not have that extra push and we’ve been okay with winning that game four nothing when we shouldn’t be but I was pretty proud of the guys to go out in the third and not necessarily wanting to hammer another team but for our group right now we need to have that hunger to finish games out.”

Cariboo outshot Thompson 43-19 with Marcus Allen getting the shutout in goal.

The major-midget Cats improve their record to 17-4-1-0 just two points back of the Valley West Hawks for the number one seed in the BCMML after the Hawks lost 5-4 to the Kootenay Ice this morning.

Cariboo picked up a 6-4 victory over the Blazers on Saturday thanks to a hat-trick from Mason Richey.

The pre-Christmas schedule wraps up next weekend in Nanaimo against the North Island Silvertips on Saturday and Sunday.

From there, the Cougars will head to the coveted Mac’s Midget AAA Hockey Tournament from Calgary, Alberta starting on Boxing Day.
