MOOSE JAW, Sask. – Étienne Montpetit made 39 saves, Danick Crete had three points and the Grenadiers de Châteauguay advanced to the gold medal game at the 2014 TELUS Cup with a 6-1 semifinal win over the Toronto Young Nationals on Saturday night.

The victory sends the Grenadiers to a match-up with the Prince Albert Mintos in Sunday’s final (3 p.m. MT, TSN), while the Young Nationals will face the Okanagan Rockets for the bronze medal (11 a.m. MT).

Crête finished with a goal and two assists, Samuel Levac had a goal and an assist, and Alexandre Payusov, Brandon McCulloch and Brendan Peacock each added a pair of helpers in the win.

Other Grenadiers goals came from Pascal Laberge, Pierre-Luc Sanche, Justin Doucet and Martin-Olivier Cardinal.

Toronto’s only goal came off the stick of James Guest.

Châteauguay struck twice in the first period, both before the six-minute mark; Crête carried the puck from his own end before rifling a shot through Toronto goaltender Izzy Benigno just 98 seconds in, and Levac stepped into a slap shot in the slot and picked the top corner for a 2-0 lead at 5:52.

Despite outshooting the Grenadiers 15-10 in the first period Toronto trailed by two, and things only got worse for the Young Nationals in the second period.

Again the Central Region champions held an advantage in shots, this time 13-9, but again the Grenadiers put two past Benigno.

First, Tyler Hylland burst down the right wing and snapped a shot on Benigno, which the goaltender was unable to corral, and Cardinal swooped in to bang home the loose puck for a 3-0 lead. Then, late in the middle frame, Sanche snuck a shot under Benigno’s arm to make it 4-0.

A fifth goal three minutes into the third, off the stick of Laberge, spelled the end for Benigno, who was replaced by Oliver Jacobs after allowing five goals on 21 shots.

Guest finally got the Young Nationals on the board at the 4:58 mark of the third on the power play, pounding a slap shot past Montpetit, but that would be the lone puck to beat the Châteauguay netminder.

Toronto outshot the Grenadiers in every period, and 40-28 overall.

Doucet capped the scoring with two minutes left, tipping in a Crête point shot on a Châteauguay man advantage.

MOOSE JAW, Sask. – Étienne Montpetit a effectué 39 arrêts, Danick Crête a accumulé trois points et les Grenadiers de Châteauguay se sont qualifiés pour le match pour la médaille d’or de la Coupe TELUS 2014 grâce à une victoire de 6-1 sur les Young Nationals de Toronto samedi soir.

Les Grenadiers affronteront donc les Mintos de Prince Albert en finale dimanche (15 h HR, TSN) tandis que les Young Nationals joueront contre les Rockets de l’Okanagan pour la médaille de bronze (11 h HR).

Crête a accumulé un but et deux aides dans la victoire, Samuel Levac, un but et une aide, et Alexandre Payusov, Brandon McCulloch et Brendan Peacock, deux aides chacun.

Les autres buts des Grenadiers ont été l’œuvre de Pascal Laberge, Pierre-Luc Sanche, Justin Doucet et Martin-Olivier Cardinal.

James Guest a été le seul à faire vibrer les cordages pour Toronto.

Châteauguay a marqué deux fois au premier tiers avant la sixième minute de jeu. Crête a transporté la rondelle à partir de sa propre zone avant de décocher un tir précis qui a déjoué le gardien de but de Toronto,
Izzy Benigno, après seulement 98 secondes de jeu, puis Levac a atteint un coin supérieur du filet au moyen d’un tir frappé de la zone privilégiée pour doubler l’avance à 2-0 à 5 min 52 s.

Bien qu’ils aient dominé les Grenadiers 15-10 au chapitre des tirs au but en première période, les Young Nationals tiraient de l’arrière par deux buts et les choses ont été de mal en pis au deuxième vingt.
Les champions de la région centrale ont à nouveau dominé dans la colonne des tirs, 13-9 cette fois-ci, mais les Grenadiers ont encore déjoué Benigno à deux reprises.  

D’abord, Tyler Hylland a foncé à l’aile droite et décoché un boulet que Benigno n’a pu maîtriser, et Cardinal s’est avancé pour récupérer le rebond et porter la marque à 3-0. Puis, vers la fin de la période médiane, Sanche a placé un tir sous le bras de Benigno pour creuser l’écart à 4-0.  

Un cinquième but, celui de Laberge, à la troisième minute du dernier tiers a chassé Benigno de son poste devant le filet. Oliver Jacobs a pris la relève après que son homologue eut accordé cinq buts en 21 tirs.

Guest a enfin noirci la feuille de pointage du côté de Toronto à 4 min 58 s de la troisième période pendant une supériorité numérique en déjouant Montpetit d’un tir frappé. Aucun autre tir n’allait percer l’armure du gardien de Châteauguay pour le reste du match.

Toronto a dominé les Grenadiers à chaque période dans la colonne des tirs au but et 40-28 au total.  

Doucet a marqué le dernier but de la soirée alors qu’il restait deux minutes à jouer en déviant un tir de la pointe de Crête pendant une supériorité numérique.
