Despite the win, Mintos co-coach Todd Becker noted the team wasn’t off to their best start at the beginning of the game.
“It was OK, I guess, still not quite where we want to be, putting it up on the rails and (we’re) trying to get them as most uncomfortable as they can at the beginning of the game,” Becker said. “Again, the biggest thing that we got out of this game is that we’re turning pucks over too much. (We’ve) got to get better at getting pucks up for the right reason.”
Mintos’ forward Chase Tippett made an impact on the scoreboard during Sunday’s game, netting the Prince Albert team’s first and second goals of the game.
Down by one in the first period, Tippett got one past Argos goalie Dawson Weatherill at the eight-minute mark. Riley Sawchuk had the assist.
Three minutes into the second frame, tied at one apiece, Tippett was also responsible for the Mintos’ second goal. Sawchuk and Matthew Parsons had the assist.
“Tippett was our best forward on the ice today, right from the drop of the puck he was the fastest player out there and doing great things with pucks along the walls,” Becker said.
In the past 10 games, Tippett has made one assist. Within two games he’s made three goals this season so far -- his first against the Swift Current Legionnaires on Oct. 26 and the two during Sunday’s game against the Argos.
Tippet comes from a hockey family. His father Brad Tippett was a former coach in the WHL for the Prince Albert Raiders as well as the Regina Pats. His uncle Dave Tippett is currently the head coach of the Arizona Coyotes and was the former head coach of the Dallas Stars in the NHL.
But for the former Regina Pats Canadian, the game is all about helping his team win; the goals were an added benefit.
“For me I don’t judge my game on points on how many goals or assists I have, I go out and work hard and do what I can to help our team win and they’re starting to go in for me,” he said. “I just love (that) the team’s coming together. It’s good when you work hard and get rewarded.”
The Argos rallied with eight minutes left in the second frame as Kirill Klassen netted the puck on the power play to tie the score 2-2.
Thirty seconds later, Mintos' forward Josh Roberts passed the puck ahead to blue-liner Jake Hobson for a one-on-one situation in front of the Argos’ net. Hobson quickly dished it to forward Kody White for the Mintos’ third goal.
Reed Gunville was responsible for the Mintos’ fourth of the game just after the power play ended with 32 seconds left in the period. Erik Gardiner assisted Gunville with his sixth goal of the season for the eventual final score of 4-2
The Mintos’ seventh win of the season keeps them in fifth place in the SMAAAHL behind the Saskatoon Contacts.
The Mintos’ next home game will be against Beardy’s Blackhawks on Nov. 13 at 7 p.m.
