The BCMML regular season started this past weekend, and it definitely carried over some momentum and excitement from the pre-season. The Vancouver NW Giants start off the season in first place being the only team to have won both of their games this weekend over the North Island Silvertips. The Giants start off their season right, carrying forward their high-scoring from the pre-season with a 9-1 win and a 7-3 win with four of their sixteen goals from forward Jackson Leppard and five assists each from forward Josh Latta and defenceman Carter Stephenson.
The league’s starting leading scorer is Ben Evanish from the Valley West Hawks who scored five goals this weekend against the Cariboo Cougars. The Hawks’ win and tie against the Cougars put them in second place behind the Vancouver NW Giants to start the season. Ben also earned one assist this weekend putting him in first place overall with six points, tied with Carter Stephenson and Josh Latta of the Giants who both had five assists and one goal.
The league also had their first shutout in the first weekend with the Okanagan Rockets shutting out the Vancouver NE Chiefs 4-0 on Sunday. This puts the Chiefs, along with the Silvertips, at the bottom of the ‘goals for’ column with 4 goals each, along with the Kootenay Ice who had the first weekend off.
Next weekend all games will be played at the Richmond Olympic Oval, so if you are local be sure to check out some games in person and cheer on your favourite teams! Good luck to all teams next weekend and throughout the regular season.
